Task 7.2: Tribology-Optimization

Objectives

  • Utilise piston ring tribology simulation code, with new friction and wear models, to improve understanding of tribological behaviour.
  • Novel piston ring designs and materials that will reduce overall friction of the piston ring package by more than 25%, without increasing the amount of wear significantly and with increased reliability.
  • Development and application of advanced measurement techniques in order to assess piston ring performance under test rig running conditions.
  • Assessment of piston ring performance under controlled full scale running conditions.
  • Development of novel low friction guide shoe bearings.
  • Engine installation and measurements on guide shoe bearings and verification of friction and wear performance by long term testing / calculation.
  • Reduction of overall friction in guide shoe bearing by more than 25 %
